In 1818 the city sod the building to the federal government, and it was used as the Post Office until 1896. In 1898 it was occupied by the U.S. Light House Service. When a developer wanted to buy the site for a gas station in 1912, the DAR was successful in petitioning the building as an historic memorial. |
